A Lesson Learned: Why?

Why do bad things happen? Why do good people suffer? Why does healing come up to some who are ill just not to others?

Have y'all ever struggled with these questions? Yeah, me as well.

I'yard participating in yet another amazing Beth Moore Bible study this fall…The Beloved Disciple:  The Life and Ministry of John. Getting a glimpse of Jesus' earthly ministry peering over the shoulder of the youngest disciple has already encouraged me and strengthened my faith.

But the scenario that stuck out to me this week was after the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. It was afterward the church started wildly growing due to the Holy Spirit being given to the disciples. I can't stop thinking about this situation that we read about in Acts 12. Continue in mind that James is John'southward big brother (and John is still probably a teenager when all of this is happening).

"Information technology was most this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. He had James, the blood brother of John, put to death with the sword. When he saw that this met with approval among the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter besides. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. After arresting him, he put him in prison house, handing him over to exist guarded by four squads of iv soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial later the Passover.

So Peter was kept in prison, but the church building was earnestly praying to God for him.

The night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter was sleeping between ii soldiers, spring with two bondage, and sentries stood guard at the entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. "Quick, get upwardly!" he said, and the chains barbarous off Peter's wrists." -Acts 12: ane-7

Why did God save Peter but not James? God is certainly capable of miraculously releasing the chains on Peter'southward captivity…why didn't he exert that same power on James' behalf? Why???

I've wrestled with these same questions that the disciple John surely had afterwards the loss of my own brother. He was tragically killed in a auto accident at the age of nineteen…almost 15 years agone. I was 13 when he died. I particularly wrestled with this question afterward our car blow this past Jan…which was eerily like to the accident that took my blood brother'south life. All four of u.s. literally walked away without a scratch.

Why did God allow us to live but not my brother? Why did God save Peter but non James?

The truth is…nosotros will never know the answer this side of Heaven. As frustrating and uncomfortable as this respond is, it is i that requires the states to have faith. To have faith that God hears our prayers…yet sometimes His ways are not ours. His thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8).

We'll never know for certain why God saves i merely not some other…not until we meet our Maker face to face, anyway. But we are bodacious that He will never exit usa (Hebrews 13:5), even when information technology feels as though He'southward deserted u.s.a.. God assures usa that in ALL things He works for the adept of those who dearest Him (Romans 8:28)…even when it feels like the expert can't peradventure make upwardly for the loss and despair. God is shut to the broken hearted (Psalm 34:18)…He endured watching His ain son mocked, browbeaten, tortured, and killed. He knows the pain of those who mourn.

"I remain confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the LORD
in the land of the living.
Wait for the LORD;
be strong and have middle
and look for the LORD." -Psalm 27:13-fourteen

When yous start asking, "why"…wait for the Lord. Though yous may never have answers, you Volition encounter His goodness.
